I’ve done news writing, feature articles, technical writing, grant writing, online content, marketing writing and more. Below are examples of my feature writing, newsletter writing, technical writing and my PR writing.

Feature Writing

thumb10 Ways to Improve Your Business Writing (PDF, 114k)

Communicating quickly and clearly is especially important in business writing. Here’s a feature article on ways to improve your business writing.

thumb11 Ways to Keep Writing (PDF, 92k)

Momentum means a lot when writing. Once you get started you want to keep going. When I think about the craft of writing I remember a scene from the dark comedy Throw Mama From the Train starring Billy Crystal and Danny DeVito.

thumbHumor in the Workplace Helps Relieve Stress (PDF, 304k)

My first article published in the Central Florida Legal Assistant’s newsletter, ALA Crosstalk. This advice is as good today as it was in 1994, lighten up at work.

Newsletters

I produced these newsletters for Total Graphic Services, Inc. and the Center for Independent Living in Central Florida (CIL). CIL is a nonprofit that provides a variety of services to people with disabilities. The audiences for the CIL newsletter are lawmakers, clients, donors and other external audiences. Total Graphic Services, Inc. used to provide photocopying services to law firms. These newsletters were aimed at an internal audience. I wrote, did the design and layout for nearly all the newsletters shown here.

thumbGraphics Graffiti May 1994 (PDF, 177k)

I wrote the Job/Family Balancing Act article for this edition. It was fun to do a newsletter for employees. You had the freedom to try some different things and encourage folks to contribute.

thumbGraphics Graffiti June 1994 (PDF, 266k)

I wrote the cover story on planning for your vacation. The messages from the president were always pretty good. Sometimes the president can be a little, well, difficult.

thumbIndependent Life June 2006 (PDF, 234k)

This was the first issue of the newsletter I created for the Center for Independent Living in Central Florida, Independent Life. In this issue I wrote about assistive technology.

thumbIndependent Life October 2006 (PDF, 456k)

In this issue I interview a lady that received a wheelchair ramp built by our agency.

thumbIndependent Life March 2007 (PDF, 415k)

In this issue I do a profile of a business owner with disabilities who does balloon art and an article on the Road to Freedom tour.

thumbIndependent Life July 2007 (PDF, 196k)

I write a good article on emergency preparedness and the special needs of people with disabilities in disasters.

thumbIndependent Life November 2007 (PDF, 164k)

This was one of the only newsletters with story submissions from staff. I did the editing and wrote other articles to fill out this issue.

thumbIndependent Life April 2008 (PDF, 189k)

This was the first issue of the big presidential election year so I wrote an article on voting rights.

Technical Writing

thumbGENESIS Load Policy (PDF, 64k)

I worked as a technical writer for FedEx for a few years. I wrote all the support documentation for an in-house software project called GENESIS. This document details the software load policy.

thumbGENESIS Report (PDF, 92k)

This is a report I helped the Managing Director put together on the monthly activities of the GENESIS project.

Public Relations/Press Releases

thumbSouthern Garden Stroll Press Release (PDF, 173k)

Before I worked for the Center for Independent Living I volunteered for them. I was asked to produce a whole package of marketing communications for a special event called the Southern Garden Stroll. Here’s a press release written for that event.

thumbRampage Press Release 2006 (PDF, 45k)

Rampage is an annual wheelchair ramp building project conducted at the Center for Independent Living. Here’s a release I wrote for the event.

thumbRampage Press Release 2007 (PDF, 55k)

Here is the press release I wrote for the wheelchair ramp building event Rampage 2007.
