I graduated from the Ohio State University with a degree in journalism. While still in college I started my first reporting job as a part-time reporter/anchor for Columbus, Ohio’s WOSU-AM in 1987. I got my next job in 1990 at WBZS-AM in Orlando, Florida. In 1991 I started as a part-time board operator for WMFE-FM. I worked there until 1998. In addition to board operator I was producer and operations manager. Here is a collection of spot news, promotional spots and long form documentary pieces I produced during my years in radio.

Spot News

thumbDiscovery Launch (MP3, 1.3m, 2:55)
This was the first shuttle launch after a summer of embarrassment for NASA. In the spring, the shuttle Discovery had put the nearsighted Hubble Space Telescope in orbit. NASA also battled a series of fuel and hydraulic leaks on both Atlantis and Columbia that prevented scheduled launches. This flight went off without a single problem and launched the satellite “Galileo”. Aired on WBZS-AM.

thumbTheater Opening (MP3, 958k, 2:02)
It was the recession of the early 1990′s and a new movie theater opening was a big deal. This was a real PR coup for the theater because they got the mayor, the local university president, and other civic leaders to come out for a simple movie theater opening. I covered the event from the economic angle. Aired on WBZS-AM.

All the politicians are happy to see a reporter with a microphone at this embryonic stage in their campaign. Aired on the Florida News Network.

This fictional account is just one way university research can go astray when influenced by corporate dollars. Reporter Chris Howell explored industry ties to Ohio State University and filed this report. Aired on WOSR Radio.
